To be a “born again” Christian is often seen outside of Christianity as describing someone who is extreme in their views and beliefs about Jesus and the bible.  Rather this passage teaches that to be born again is the absolutely necessary experience of all who profess faith in Jesus and who can be called Christians.   In this passage, Nicodemus is presented as a man who has a religious belief – believing some true things about Jesus, but who has not been born again.
