Mark 5:1-20 – “The Power and Mercy of Jesus”
September 25, 2023
Speaker: Chris Shannon
Text:
Just as Jesus saves the man possessed by a legion of demons, no one is too far gone or out of reach to be saved by God. Jesus has the power and right to look upon us with judgement, but instead provides us with mercy, taking upon himself the sin, pain and trauma that we bring upon ourselves. After the demon possessed man is cleaned, he asks to follow Jesus, but Jesus asks him to stay and tell of what God has done for him, and the people that he told were amazed.
Mark 14:1-10, “She did what she could”
April 2, 2022
Speaker: Gerald Vanderkolk
Text:
Nobody should criticise Mary for the generosity of her gift because the motivation was right! In fact, it makes our love seem rather poor in comparison. Motivation is such an important part of the Christian life. How do we respond to the Saviour’ love for us? At times we seem to be far too calculating in our response. When God freed the Israelites from Egypt, they complained so much about things and we might seem to have far more in common with them than Mary.
Still Worried (Worry – part 2)
May 23, 2021
Speaker: Steven Goring
Text:
In this 2nd sermon on worry, we consider that sometimes or worry comes from a lack of faith. We also have to ask if we treasure the things on earth more than we treasure God and trust him when he gives us what we don’t want or does not give us what we do want. In Jesus, we see a man who did not worry. Not about his life, death or praise of man. His death and resurrection means that we can be in a relationship with him, part of his kingdom and live a life of no worries. We like Jesus can know the perfect love of the father, a love that drives out fear and worry.
Mark 8:27-38 and Jeremiah 17:1-8 Discipleship 101
February 6, 2021
Speaker: Steven Goring
Text:
The passage in many ways lays out for us the basics of what it means to be a genuine disciple of Jesus – Discipleship 101. A true disciple is imperfect but learning to follow Jesus. They are also those who deny themselves in favour of following Jesus and being obedient to him. This is done even at great cost, without being ashamed.
Easter Sunday – Banking everything on the Resurrection!
April 11, 2020
Speaker: Steven Goring
Text:
We celebrate today the good news that Jesus has risen from the dead! But why is it good news? What are the implications of the resurrection? What difference does it and should it make in the lives of Christians today? We look at the disciples who knew Jesus was dead but then heard he was alive and then finally saw him alive. From that moment on these men were changed in every way. The resurrection changes everything! Having banked everything on Jesus only for him to die surely shattered their hopes and made them feel like everything had been lost. But then he rises from the dead and everything changes!
Mark 2:1-12 Who is this Man?
November 9, 2019
Speaker: Steven Goring
Text:
The book of Mark asks and helps to answer the question – Who is this man Jesus? In this passage where Jesus heals a paralysed man, there is further evidence that Jesus is in fact not merely a man but is, in fact, God incarnate. This is seen as Jesus knows people’s heart, He has authority to heal and that He has authority to forgive sins. We are left then to answer the question – Who do you say he is? Knowing who he is then, we must consider our response to him. We do that also recognising who we are to Jesus and how he has responded to us as lost sinners.
Mark 1:29-39 & 1 Cor 9:16-27 Mission and Action: BE TRANSFORMED
August 10, 2019
Speaker: Steven Goring
Text:
This is the 2nd part in a 2 part series to introduce and teach the church our new mission statement. “We exist to Win people to Christ and to be transformed to be like Jesus.” We want to recognise that having a mission gives us our reason for being and that from our mission comes action. This week we look at the need for Christians to be transformed. We are called to holiness, to Christlikeness. And it is not optional or for the super Christians only. J.C. Ryle said, “Jesus is a complete saviour. He does not merely take away the guilt of a believer’s sin, he does more – he breaks its power.”
Mark 1:29-39 & 1 Cor 9:16-27 Mission and Action: WIN
August 3, 2019
Speaker: Steven Goring
Text:
This is the first part in a 2 part series to introduce and teach the church our new mission statement. “We exist to Win people to Christ and to be transformed to be like Jesus.” We want to recognise that having a mission gives us our reason for being and that from our mission comes action. Today we look at what it means to Win people to Christ, how we are part of it and must seek to Win and yet recognise that it is only God who ultimately Wins anybody.
