Who was Melchizedek, and why does the author of Hebrews make so much of him? In this sermon we’ll see how this mysterious Old Testament figure points us to Jesus Christ, our great and eternal High Priest. In this Hebrews passage Brad explores how God’s Word cuts to darkest areas of our being and exposes our unbelief.

We continue on in Hebrews, looking at the start of Chapter 3. Many Christians today would agree that Jesus is better than Moses, why is this an important truth for us to dwell on? How do we fix our eyes on Jesus alone?

This is our final sermon in our TULIP series. P stands for ‘Perseverance of the Saints.’ This point addresses our eternal security. Many professing Christians end up turning away from Jesus. This leaves us asking the question: must man persevere in faith or is is God the One who preserves us?? In Philippians we read “He who has begun a good work in you will perfect it to the end.” (Phil 1:6)

Young Adults Evening Service. “Why bother with going to church? Because Jesus bothered to save us, and wants to see more saved. We are called to be God’s family, his embassy, to see God preached to a lost world. Are you bothered to go to church? Does it bother you that people are missing out on this?”

Hebrews 4:14 says “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” In this sermon we are reminded that Jesus is not just a symbol, He is the true High Priest.

Today we remember that Jesus is born! The saviour of the world, which is good news of great joy for all the people! But what impact does this good have for you? Is it just generally good news that he came to be your saviour, or when you break it down, does a baby born in a manger make a difference and impact your life every day? Today as we celebrate Jesus’ birth, we consider 3 reasons why he came and how that is good news for us today!

Simon introduces us to a better “High Priest” in Jesus who is able to do immeasurably more for us than any other intermediary.

We are all pretty good at talking our way out of difficult situations, we call that “rationalising” the situation. The dictionary meaning for “Rationalising” is the following. “… attempt to explain or justify (behaviour or an attitude) with logical reasons, even if these are not appropriate.” We are good at rationalising a situation and Daniel’s three friends could have done something similar by bowing before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Yet they did not! The thing is this. They placed obedience to God, laid down in the 10 commandments, as a higher priority to them than obedience to Nebuchadnezzar. Those commandments again are these… You shall have no other gods before me… 2. You shall not bow to them or worship them…

Hebrews 12:1-2 has been the theme verse for the GEMS and Cadets this year (2018) which explores the theme of running the race. We need to be in the race firstly if we want to win the prize, but once in the race there is a way that we are expected to run, a way that we are expected to live our lives as Christians. We must 1. Cast off 2. consider the cost versus coasting and 3. We must look to the coach.
